What is Shariah investing?
Ethical investing with a faith-based foundation - it is not just for Muslims, but for anyone who values transparency and social responsibility.
Shariah investing follows Islamic finance principles, governed by standards set by the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI).
It ensures that capital allocation and portfolio construction comply with Shariah law, while maintaining robust investment discipline and fiduciary oversight.
Core principles of shariah investing
Prohibition of riba (interest)
Investments cannot generate income from interest-bearing instruments such as conventional bonds or deposits.
Sector exclusions
Companies primarily engaged in activities deemed impermissible - such as conventional banking, alcohol, gambling, pork products, and adult entertainment – are excluded.
Asset-backed transactions
Investments must be linked to tangible assets or real economic activity, avoiding excessive uncertainty and speculative instruments.
Risk sharing and fairness
Structures emphasise partnership and equitable distribution of risk and return, consistent with Islamic jurisprudence.
Governance and oversight:
A Shariah Supervisory Board comprising qualified scholars provides independent oversight, issuing rulings (fatwas) and certifying compliance.
